Gone are the days when internet dating sites were for the desperate and the deranged. They used to have a pretty bad reputation with plenty of horror stories attached: people not being who they said they were, people going missing, identity theft – we’ve heard them all. But something has happened over the last five or so years that has made online dating not only acceptable but an intrinsic part of people’s lives.

Here’s an interesting article over at The Hill that discusses how the recession has affected online dating. There are many interesting facts in this article such as Match.com has 56% male members and that when the economy suffers a blow, such as a day where the stock market is down, activity on dating sites goes up. From the article:
A December 2008 national study conducted by eHarmony and Opinion Research Corp. found that, of more than 1,000 adults polled, 19 percent [...]

I’m really learning to love OKCupid more every day. As I’ve written here in the past, it is my recommended free dating service. Aside from offering a great free dating option, they’re the only service that offers substantial statistics on the dating habits of their members.
In some ways I believe these statistics aren’t going to tell the whole story as I believe the type of clientele will differ from service to service. As an example, this article I’m about [...]

A recent article shows how online dating is gaining ever more acceptance. As someone who has been defending online dating for five years, I think this news is great:
If you spent Valentine’s Day looking for love online then you are among the one in three Internet users who regard the web as a good place to find a relationship, according to a new study.
The BBC World Service global poll showed that 30 percent of web users regard the Internet as [...]

Over at Mashable, there was a poll that asked users which was better: Match.com or Plenty of Fish. Their results showed that, at least among their readers, that Plenty of Fish is the better service. I find this rather disturbing: I look at (or read about) dating services almost every day and I have to say that Plenty of Fish is absolutely my least favorite dating service. My article on 5 Signs Your Dating Service Might Suck was actually based [...]

Poll: Men More Than Women Get Depressed After Breakup
An article discusses poll results from Date.com…results that I found to be rather shocking statistics (I guess since I’m a guy). Apparently, 85 percent of men suffer some form of depression and have difficulty getting back into dating after a break-up. Compared this to only 8 percent of women! A very interesting read and I have to admit I never handled break-ups very well.

I was recently talking to a woman who decided to end an online relationship after the first date because her date had complained for much of the dinner. This got me thinking about complaining in general and how as people we are so drawn to doing so. Even when this woman came to me to discuss this bad date, she was doing so to…well…complain!
Because as people we complain so often, I don’t see the activity in itself as a [...]

If you’re a man and you’ve ever been frustrated by the fact that you fall apart socially around beautiful women, it’s not just you. According to a study discussed in the Telegraph, studies have shown that men actually do lose much of their ability to think and reason when around pretty women:
The research shows men who spend even a few minutes in the company of an attractive woman perform less well in tests designed to measure brain function than those [...]

According to the Telegraph, scientists have declared that men should marry women who are younger and smarter than themselves. The article is a little short on the details but I did find another article stating that men who marry younger women live longer.
While I find articles like this interesting, it always seems like a new group of scientists is coming out with a new metric that will determine the success of a relationship. Finding someone you click with is often [...]

Does your profile get a lot of attention but you’re not getting any contacts from other online daters?
I wanted to discuss a few possibilities on why this can happen. One major assumption I’ll be making is that you have a good profile photo. As I’ll discuss later in this article, a good photo is often the most important part of your profile, especially for women. However, since the problem being discussed includes the fact that the profile is receiving [...]

Recently in the Telegraph there was an article that discussed how women should dress at the bar to meet the most men. They’re findings suggest that a woman should reveal 40% of her skin to meet the most men. Revealing too little leads to far less contact from men (up to 40% less). However, revealing much more than this leads also leads to less contact, although the article doesn’t reveal by how much.
A couple of thoughts on this. First, none [...]
