Being new to online dating and growing comfortable with online dating both share one risk for people if they’re not careful: revealing far too much personal information far too early.
Early this month a reader contacted me with the following question:

Months ago I had watched a segment on CBS that discussed some interesting ideas for making driving safer. Some of these approaches appear to make driving more dangerous but resulted in much safer results. Here’s a video of that segment:

This article is one in a series that discusses protecting yourself from scams when dating online.
As online dating grows more popular so do dating scams associated with them. There are many good resources online describing dating scams but not very many give concrete ways to defend or combat them. Because of this, I want to offer some actual methods to detect if you’re dealing with a dishonest person. I’ll try to cover the tools in detail so you can perform [...]

Online Dating Scams: The 419 Scam
The Romance Scam is often mentioned in relation to the 419 scam (also referred to as the Nigerian scam). The standard 419 scam involves the scammer offering you a large sum of money if you help them move that money out of the country they are currently in. For example, they may want to send you a check for $50,000 [...]

There are many online dating scams out there but I would consider this the “main” scam. This scam involves the scammer posing as a potential love interest with the goal of making money off of their target. It’s amazing how many people are fooled by this one but the bad guys are good at what they do and can be very convincing.

In August of 2006, I had my first experience with a fraudulent charge on a credit card. The charge was for service at AmericanSingles.com and was labeled “VISA CHECK CARD PURCHASE SPR*AMERICANSINGLES.COM 888-8543803 CA”. While I had visited AmericanSingles and had used the free services they provide for a short time, I never provided them with a credit card.
I contacted American Singles and they were very easy to work with. They said that the account opened with my credit card [...]

In my last post, I talked briefly about background checks as well as the Safer Online Dating Alliance (SODA). As I mentioned there, I feel that the rules SODA lays out for safer dating are excellent. However, I would like to take a few moments to discuss just a few of the rules in an effort to encourage everyone to be open to the new advice without following it blindly.
8. Spend time getting to know someone online before talking on [...]

A reader contacted me this week with some thoughts on my recent article regarding risks with online dating:
Your post on October 29th titled the Risk of Trusting was a great reminder of how important it is to be cautious. I appreciated your willingness to point out that there is plenty of room for failure and danger in online dating.
I thought you might be interested in a few other resources that people can use to ensure their own safety. My [...]

While online dating is bringing more and more people dating success everyday, there is another reminder in the news that caution should be exercised. In this story, an Australian man flew to Mali to meet his “bride” only to be taken hostage. While this is horrible, it seems the man from the article isn’t the typical online dater (as the article states, he made a similar trip to Russia in the past also looking for a bride). In another case [...]

Today, I’ve had some traffic coming in from Google regarding phone calls. In each case, the person was interested in some aspect of phone conversations after the first date. Since the site is light on any phone conversation thought, I decided offer some advice for these searches based on my experiences.
Search: “Rules of dating phone call after first date” from East Hanover, NJ
First, there aren’t any hard and fast rules about anything in dating. I’ve had conversations that worked wonderfully [...]
